Katrina was first introduced to and fell in love with the yoga practice through a course called Prayers of the Body and Heart: Yoga as a Spiritual Discipline. Yoga opened up a way for Katrina to connect the mind, body and spirit, creating space in her life for physical wellness, inner peace and mental clarity. Having worked 8 years in campus ministry and being a busy mom of 4 young children, yoga became a sacred space in her life. As the benefits of a consistent practice began to take effect, Joanne Spence, Director of Yoga on the Square Studio, encouraged Katrina to pursue sharing these benefits with others through becoming a yoga instructor.
Katrina began her training with Yogafit, a national-based training organization designed to improve physical fitness and mental acuity of individuals desiring to improve their overall health. She has completed level 1, 2 and 3 trainings through Yogafit. Desiring to find a local training with a philosophical emphasis as well as physical benefits of yoga, Katrina switched to a 200 hour teacher training in hatha yoga (the physical practice of postures) within the broader tradition of Raja yoga (the study of meditation). In January 2009, she became RYT certified through Third Street Yoga teacher training. Katrina feels that the benefits of physical movement combined with the cultivation of inner awareness through meditation, not only lead to greater mental clarity and inner peace, but also open a way for us to connect with the Divine.
Katrina also enjoys sharing the practice of yoga in the public schools. She works for Yoga in Schools, a non-profit organization teaching children yoga and training teachers in how to use yoga-based tools in the classroom in order to encourage greater self awareness and self care. Katrina is certified teacher with YogaEd., seeking to improve focus, concentration, creativity, responsible behavior and academic achievement within the public schools.
When Katrina is not teaching, she enjoys reading, swimming, creating jewelry, taking long walks and spending time with her husband and four children.
